The island dates back to 1898, when Lord Kitchener, the British commander, decided to convert it into a botanical garden after it had been used as the headquarters for the British military campaign in southern Egypt. Many rare plants were imported from around the world, especially from India and tropical Africa, and cultivated on the island—making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world.
